Powercor Australia, a Victoria-based utility, has installed a 2.2 MWh lithium-ion battery system in Buninyong, along one of the main powerlines that services 6,400 customers in the area. Equivalent to 20% of the current powerline's capacity, the battery will increase the bandwidth of the network on peak demand days and perform transmission support, ancillary services, and capacity.

The battery is housed in a 40 foot shipping container and is capable of providing back-up power to approximately 3,000 customers for an hour during a power outage.
